Great console for playing original tomb raiders. So convenient to play on the go. Graphics are good and sound is fine.

Just over a year ago I purchased an Evercade EXP which I quickly found to be faulty, I ordered a replacement and found that unit to be faulty, anyway a year has passed and decided to give Evercade a third try with the EXP-R! Should of known better a year down the line and once again a faulty unit with a faulty battery and light bleed on dark screens so buyer beware you take a risk when purchasing. Me however there won’t be a fourth I’m done with Evercade and their poor quality.

I’m really happy with the build quality and ease of use it looks and feels loads better than the switch

As a Evercade VS owner I was excited to hear that an updated version of Evercade’s EXP handheld was coming out. I’ve had the Evercade VS for a little over 2 years now and have really enjoyed the experience but wanted something I could use on my commute, to still rack up the high scores on the move. I considered the Super Pocket but found it to be too small to comfortably use. I therefore opted to get the EXP-R, especially as it comes bundled with the Tomb Raider Collection; a set of games I’d played very little of back in the day – just the demo of Tomb Raider and a handful of hours on the sequel. The consoleThe EXP-R feels good in the hand, with easily accessible controls on both the front and top. The buttons have varying amounts of travel but all have a positive, responsive feel to them. The buttons having different “clicks” makes it easy to distinguish them without having to look away from the action on-screen which I love. The handheld can use TATE mode on certain games to make things more interesting and easier to play vertical-based games. The screen is bright and has a good colour range, though unfortunately both of my units from Amazon suffered from light bored on the bottom edges which were distracting and caused me to return both of them. I sourced an alternative from another retailer which is much better, so presumably it was just a bad batch?Sound-wise it’s pretty good but not mind blowing. The speakers do a decent enough job but the EXP-R definitely benefits from the use of headphones via the 3.5mm jack, conveniently placed at the bottom of the unit.I did have problems with loading 2 of my 6 existing cartridges with one of the units I received. Unfortunately despite running the firmware updates and trying a factory reset they just wouldn’t work even though they have always worked flawlessly with my VS console. Cartridge fit on the other hand is very good, with a nice solid connection.Charging the device is easy via the USB-C to USB-A cable that’s included in the package – you just need a suitable plug but most mobile phone chargers should be compatible. Charge time is around 2 hours with an average battery life of around 4 hours, though this looks set to be improved with use through the “smart battery” and updates from Evercade.Overall then some niggly problems that really should have been ironed out during the QC phase but thanks to placing another order I’ve since had no issues at all.The cartridgeThe Tomb Raider Collection cartridge comes in full retail packaging, complete with a beautifully printed manual, details features of the game as well the controls. I really like the fact that Evercade clearly put a lot of time and effort in the presentation of their cartridges.I’ve only had chance to play the first Tomb Raider game but it loads and plays smoothly with good sound and responsive controls. It would have been nice if the triggers could have been programmed to be used for the weapon controls but I imagine this was a purposeful decision, given that the PlayStation controller layout is similar to the EXP-R button layout.Buying experienceDecent service from Amazon but as mentioned unfortunately I had to return 2 units due to light bleed and my cartridges not reading on one of them.Pros- Great, clear screen- Strong controls- Tomb Raider Collection an excellent pairing for the EXP- Really good value for moneyCons- Hit and miss issues with screen light bleed- No plug included (potentially for international and cost reasons?)- Speaker sound quality could be better

Brilliant game and amazing console. So happy that I could play the PS1 games again after all this time. I’ve tried playing the Tomb Raider remasters recently, but they were very buggy. I’m super happy that I can now play the originals and enjoy them the way they were intended!

I was really disappointed with this and returned it. The Super Pockets have much better/louder speakers and less light bleed on the screen. The EXP-R just felt cheap with a poor screen and speaker setup, even taking into account the fairly low price tag.

Having had the EXP since launch I was super excited when receiving evercade’s latest console, the EXP-R. The improved battery life and reduction of heat has made this my goto evercade going forward. It’s taken me back to endless days on my gameboy and sega game gear. Love it!

I purchased the evercade as a gift, it arrived and had a problem with the battery. It wouldn’t charge properly kept showing a red warning for low battery even after an overnight charge. Returned it and brought another putting it down to a one off fault. The second one purchased was even worse wouldn’t even accept a charge (tried 3 different chargers just in case) please be aware of rhe poor quality. Its Chrtismas coming up and I would hate to think of a kid getting this and being disappointed when it doesn’t work properly.

  9. Amazing Customer

Fun, better than the pocket version
Comfortable to use and the screen is good. It’s a neat product for anyone that enjoys retro games (or indie titles).
